Police: Man Swiped Items From Purse As Woman Slept In Madison Avenue Hotel Room

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police on Tuesday were searching for a suspect who sneaked into a room at the New York Palace Hotel on Madison Avenue, and stole several items from a 79-year-old woman's purse.

Around 11:45 p.m. Nov. 19, the man entered the room where the woman was staying at the hotel, at 455 Madison Ave. between 50th and 51st streets.

The woman was asleep at the time, police said.

The man took about $100 in cash, a credit card, and jewelry from inside her purse, and left, police said. No one was injured in the incident.

The suspect was described as a black male about 25 years old, weighing about 160 pounds. He was last seen wearing black dress shoes, a black overcoat, and blue jeans.

Police have released surveillance photos.
