Mario Cuomo died Thursday evening. He served as New York state governor for three terms, from 1983 to 1994. He previously served as New York secretary of state and lieutenant governor.

His son announced Friday he was postponing the state-of-the-state address until Jan 21. It had been scheduled for Wednesday.

The family asks in its statement that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the nonprofit HELP USA for the Mario M. Cuomo Mentoring Fund.
