Lenox Hill Hospital To Cover Visiting Couple's Medical Bill After Son Born Prematurely

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A United Kingdom couple visiting New York City got a late holiday gift.

As CBS2's Don Champion reported, the couple was on vacation when their son was born prematurely last Sunday.

Facing hundreds of thousands in medical bills, the couple had been stranded in the United States while the couple's newborn is being treated at Lenox Hill Hospital.

The couple took to the internet in an effort to raise money to pay for the medical bills, but CBS2 learned the hospital has agreed to cover the couple's nearly $200,000 hospital bill.

Lee Johnston and his fiancée Katie Amos posted a video on Facebook showing Johnston holding his newborn son, Dax. The couple had been on vacation in the city when Amos went into labor while walking through Central Park. Little Dax was born three months early.

After Dax's birth, there were doubts that the couple's insurance would cover the medical bills.

When the couple posted their story on GoGetFunding.com, people donated more than $10,000 to help them.

Since the hospital decided to cover the bill, the couple now says they have started refunding the money donated online. Anything left over will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House, which has given Lee and Amos accommodations while Dax is being treated.

Doctors say Dax is doing well and should be ready to go home sometime in March.
