29 Sickened In Suspected Carbon Monoxide Leaks At Long Island Industrial Sites

NORTH BAY SHORE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A total of 29 people were hospitalized with non-life-threatening illnesses Thursday, following carbon monoxide incidents at two separate industrial sites on Long Island.
Suffolk County police received a call around 2 p.m. for 22 people suffering from possible carbon monoxide poisoning at a USA Industries plant on Wisconsin Court in North Bay Shore.

Around 3 p.m., police were called to a nearby USA Industries site, on Candlewood Road. Seven people were hospitalized there.
A police spokeswoman said none of the cases appeared life-threatening.
The use of space heaters without proper ventilation is being blamed for the incident, WCBS 880's Mike Xirinachs.
Production manager Dennis Ruffolo said the problem has been fixed.
"Space heaters are gone. Everything was rectified. There were just low levels and hopefully employees that did have to go to the hospital will be back today [Friday]," he said.
The auto parts manufacturer is in the process of closing its two Bay Shore facilities and laying off 271 workers, Xirinachs reported.
