Police: Staten Island Mother Attacked 12-Year-Old Daughter At Her School

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Port Authority police have arrested and charged a mother for allegedly assaulting her 12-year-old daughter while at her school on Staten Island Wednesday.

According to a news release from Police Spokesperson Joseph Pentangelo, 36-year-old Bintu Fofanah met her daughter at the LaVelle School for a meeting. During the meeting, it is alleged that Fofanah began arguing, ultimately choking, slapping and punching her daughter.

Fofanah's daughter was taken to Richmond University Medical Center by ambulance for treatment.

Police investigated further and say the victim has sustained previous injuries reportedly at the hands of her mother. Fofanah allegedly used a leather belt, which caused bruising and swelling to her daughter's shoulder and arms, police say.

Fofanah is charged with strangulation, assault and reckless endangerment of a child.
