Fans Flock To Citi Field For Blood Drive Hosted By New York Mets

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) --  It may not be baseball weather, but fans flocked to Citi Field in the bitter cold Thursday for a good cause.

The New York Mets are holding a blood drive to help the New York Blood Center.

"Our donors are donors who know how important it is to donate, whether it's 98 degrees out or 9 degrees out," Doreen Fiscina of the New York Blood Center said.

Donors received a voucher for two tickets to a Mets home game in April. The offer excludes opening day.

"I'm a big Mets fan, always have been, and I try to donate as much as possible," said Patrick Hopkins of Rego Park. "It's not about the free tickets as much as it about helping people when you can."

Fans said the Mets are going to have a good year.

"Listen, I'm a mom, my oldest son is a Mets fanatic and that's what I go by," Arlene Gonzalez, who donated blood and is getting tickets for her son, said. "Whatever he says, we go by that."

"They got a great pitching staff, could use some help with the bats, but I think this year will be a good year," said Mike Lanzi of Staten Island.

Pitchers and catchers report Feb. 19.

The blood drive ends at 5 p.m. Thursday.
