Audit: Stony Brook University Was Overpaid $4.2M In Tuition Aid

ALBANY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) - Auditors say the state university on Long Island was overpaid nearly $4.2 million over three years in tuition aid for students who weren't eligible.

The amount is a projection based on an audit of 175 students at Stony Brook University that disallowed 21 payments to students who auditors say weren't enrolled full-time or didn't get the grades required.

The report says many weren't enrolled for at least 12 credits in their designated programs or repeating courses for which they already earned credit.

The report released Friday says New York's Higher Education Services Corp. should get the $4.2 million back plus interest.

HESC awarded $931 million through the Tuition Assistance Program in 2012-2013 to nearly 400,000 students.

The university and HESC did not immediately reply to requests for comment.
