NYC Food Truck Lunch: Skirt Steak Sandwich From Costumbres Argentinas

Perry, the founder of New York Street Food, brings you his latest review on New York City street food.

Happy New Year to all! Let's start the New Year with a new food cart called Costumbres Argentinas.

Just before the holiday break, we found a new food cart on 47th St just east of 6th Ave. The chef/owner was very friendly, and he told me they had been on the street for only about 2 months. You can see photos of typical Argentinian scenes on the side of the cart, and the light blue and white Argentinian flag was proudly flying.

The menu had half a dozen different sandwiches, and as usual with a new vendor, we asked what they recommended. In this case, he said the skirt steak sandwich for $9. Not a big surprise, with steak being one of the most popular dishes in Argentina.

We did get a small surprise though. While waiting for the steak to cook, we were handed half a chicken empanada with green chimichurri sauce to try. The other half was given to the guy behind me on line.

Most empanadas that we've had on the street had a lot of air inside and not much filling. This chicken empanada was stuffed full of meat. The chicken didn't have a lot of seasoning, but that's what the chimichurri sauce was for.

Peeking inside the cart, we could see a grill with fire underneath being used to cook the meat instead of a flat-top grill. We also saw a real steak being cooked, not a thin slice of beef.

Digging in, the steak was cooked to medium, as requested. The beef had some grill marks on the outside, and was pink in the middle.

The steak was fairly tender and tasty, with chimichurri sauce adding a blast of garlic and herbs to each bite.  The bread was similar to Italian bread, but very soft, not crunchy at all.

Every sandwich comes with potato salad or french fries. We're trying to be good these days, so we got the potato salad. It was creamy, with carrots and peas in the mix along with potatoes.

Costumbres Argentinas doesn't seem to have an online presence, but they are on 47th St between 6th & 7th Ave. for weekday lunches. Stop by if you're hungering for a good steak sandwich.
