Traffic Spills Onto Highway As Drivers In Edison Brave Long Lines For Cheap Gas

EDISON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Gas prices in Edison caused cars to spill out onto the highway, and police had to intervene on Friday.

As CBS2's Tracee Carrasco reported, officers were busy stopping those trying to take advantage of cheap gas.

"We were actually heading up to the movies, so we stopped right here," one driver said.

Lines of cars spilled onto Route 1 outside of a Raceway Gas Station. The price for a gallon was $1.77. Earlier in the day gas there was $1.69, but traffic backed up so badly that employees said police asked them to raise their prices to match their competitors.

"They're pretty close in price within a couple of cents, so usually when you come in this area you know you'll find the cheapest gas," Somerset resident Mohammad Karim said.

Drivers say the Raceway Gas Station, Fuel One next door at $1.79 a gallon, and the Edison Fuel Stop at $1.75 across the street are always battling for the best deal.

"These three gas stations are probably the cheapest in the area. So I specifically go up and down this road just to get gas from here," Karim said.

Employees say the real winners are the drivers.

"Nobody can sell cheaper than us," he said.

The wait may be long, but drivers say with prices this low it's worth it.

"I would rather wait and save some money if I can. That's the name of the game right?" one driver said.
