New Year, New You? Affordable Beauty Trends To Try In 2015

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Was one of your resolutions for the new year a fresh, new beauty routine?

CBS2's Meg Baker spoke with Self Magazine's beauty director Elaine D'Farley on how to beautify your look on a drug store budget.

"We want to look younger, we want to feel younger and it's all about elasticity and flexibility. You want your skin to be bouncy and glowy," D'Farley said.

Thousands of makeup, skin and hair care items line the shelves, so which do you choose?

D'Farley has scrubbed, slathered, and slicked on almost everything, selecting the best of the best to highlight.

"The drug store is a great place to get good quality products," she said. "You don't need to spend a fortune, just look for good-for-you ingredients."

D'Farley said in 2015, oils will be in the forefront of beauty regimens.

"There's a lot of new technology in oils, so that the way the ingredients are encapsulated makes them less greasy. So don't be scared of an oil," she said.

Oil also acts as a multi-tasker.

"It's good for your hair, for your skin, on your face, on your hands, on your feet -- everywhere," D'Farley said. "It's also a great scar healer."

A classic ingredient being incorporated into more and more products is oatmeal, Baker reported.

"It's very gentile, but it's a little bit exfoliating too, so it gets off all the dry skin," said D'Farley.

2015 is all about saving time and packages of wipes are good for after the gym to prevent clogged pores, Baker reported.

"They're also good for a lazy night at home if you don't want to cleanse your face and you want to cheat a little bit," D'Farley said.

When it comes to nail polish, a thicker brush makes application easier. And seek out fast-drying colors.

"For those who are technically challenged, like myself, when putting on nail polish it's one stroke and then it dries really quickly," said D'Farley.

A product we can all agree on needing this winter is moisturizers to combat chapped lips and dry skin through this bitter old, Baker reported.

All of these recommended products cost less than $18.
