EMTs Clear Long Island Bagel Shop After Portable Carbon Monoxide Detectors Go Off

WEST ISLIP, N.Y. -- Two Long Island EMTs are being hailed as heroes after alerting people inside a bagel store about a carbon monoxide leak.

While in line to order food at one of their regular stops, the Bagel Buzz in West Islip, their portable carbon monoxide detectors started going off, showing elevated levels of the toxic gas.

"It wound up being a gas leak, a slight gas leak, to the rear of the building that was infiltrating the dining area," said Josh Lebenns, an EMT with the West Islip Fire Department.

"We had no idea," said Ralph Miele, Bagel Buzz's manager. "We didn't smell anything. Had no indication of anything until these two young fellows went in the back and said, 'You need to get people out of here.'"

"There were four different employees that said they had been feeling headaches and somewhat dizzy feelings," added EMT Patrick Daly.

Miele said the EMTs who came to the rescue will now get free bagels for life.

A similar situation occurred in June, when an ambulance technician wearing a carbon monoxide detector alerted employees there about a leak at a Dunkin' Donuts in Carle Place.
