Police: Driver Was On Heroin When She Led Port Authority Squad On Chase
LEONIA, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Port Authority police on Thursday arrested a suspect who allegedly crashed into a pole in Leonia, New Jersey after leading officers on a chase.
Around 4 p.m. Thursday, a Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police sergeant was on patrol near the George Washington Bridge in a marked squad car, police said. The sergeant saw the suspect driving a 2009 Honda Civic north on Hudson Terrace in Fort Lee, and she proceeded to run a red light, police said.
The sergeant turned on his emergency lights, but the driver did not pull over, police said. She ignored police commands to pull over and led the officer on a pursuit, police said.
The pursuit finally ended at 850 Nordhoff Dr. in Leonia, where the woman crashed into a utility pole, police said.
She was taken away in an ambulance, and told emergency medical technicians she had used heroin a short time before, police said.
The driver -- Serena Wolstenholme, 29 -- of Hasbrouck Heights, was charged with driving while intoxicated on drugs and eluding police, as well as several traffic violations, police said.
She was taken to Hackensack Medical Center in Hackensack, while her car was impounded, police said.
