3 Up And 3 Down: Who's Hot And Who's Not In New York Sports

Taking a look at the latest best and worst stories on the NY/NJ sports landscape:

THREE UP

1. Islanders

The Isles went into the All-Star Break atop the Metropolitan Division, and if the Lightning and Red Wings both lose in regulation Tuesday night, they'll have sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference as well. John Tavares is rounding into form, with 18 points in his last 15 contests.

2. Rangers

What would New York do without its hockey teams this year, right? The Blueshirts went on a run and have since cooled off slightly, but have still won two in a row and seven of their last 10. Going into Tuesday night's game, they're two points behind the Penguins and seven behind the Islanders.

3. Citi Field

The Mets are getting an upgrade, but not at shortstop. They'll be getting a larger video board as well as a strikeout tracker in the outfield. While that won't help their infield very much (or at all), it's still a nice addition.

THREE DOWN

1. Woody Johnson

Just as he'd finally made two very smart choices (his new head coach and general manager), it appears that another of his ill-advised decisions could come back to bite him. Johnson thought it wise to mention that he'd like Darrelle Revis back, and given that he's currently under contract with New England, that didn't sit too well with the Patriots. They've filed tampering charges against the Jets' owner.

2. Yankees

Max Scherzer
Might Max Scherzer be on the Yankees' free agent wish list? Initially the thought was no, but they are the Yankees. Anything is possible. (Photo by Patrick Smith/Getty Images)

Their pitching rotation is a bit suspect, but the fact that they let Max Scherzer get away and didn't make a big splash by signing him was an even bigger surprise. We'll see if Brian Cashman ends up regretting it.

3. NYC Hoops

I think we can just keep the Knicks and Nets in this spot for the rest of the season. It's not fun rooting for either team right now. Pick your poison.
