Connecticut Lawmakers Seek Balance With Vehicle Taxes
HARTFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork) -- A car owner in one Connecticut town might pay $1,000 for the state's vehicle tax, while someone in another town might pay $100 for the same vehicle.
Now there's a push from lawmakers to even out the numbers, WCBS 880's Sean Adams reported.
There are 169 municipalities, with each setting its own tax rates. The reason for the discrepancy is that some cities have many tax-exempt properties.

Gov. Dannel Malloy tried to abolish the vehicle tax a few years ago, but that failed. Towns stood to lose $600 million.
Lawmakers are now considering a flat state tax on vehicles. The state would then distribute the revenue to towns.
Another proposal would cap what towns could charge and make up the difference with a state levy.
