NYC Sanitation Department Looking For Emergency Snow Laborers

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- New York City is looking for some help in clearing the snow from sidewalks, fire hydrants and more.

The Department of Sanitation has called in its emergency snow laborers to help remove snow and ice from bus stops, crosswalks, fire hydrants, and step streets throughout the city.

The sanitation department said those who are already registered as an emergency snow laborer should report to the garage or location listed on their ID card at 8 a.m. on Sunday.

Those who are not registered but would like to get involved can do so at their local district Department of Sanitation garage Sunday morning.

The rate of pay begins at $12 per hour, and increases to $18 after the first 40 hours, the sanitation department said.

To apply, you must be at least 18 years old, be eligible to work in the United States, and capable of performing heavy physical labor.

Applicants should bring two small photos about 1 1/2-inch square, original and copy of two forms of ID and Social Security card.

An overnight winter storm dumped several inches of slushy, heavy snow on New York City. Central Park saw about 2.5 inches of snow.
