Stay Warm, Stay Fashionable: Expert Tips For Looking Good In Cold Weather

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- With freezing temperatures and more snow in the forecast it can be tough to dress for the cold and still look good.

While the goal is staying warm, fashion expert Dawn Delrusso told CBS2's Cindy Hsu that it can be done in style.

She said that big, bulky coats are a don't.

"Look for something that's a little bit more tailored, that belts at the waist so you can show that you do have somewhat of a figure," Delrusso said.

Marco Cheis said thin layers are key.

"Well underneath I have a t-shirt, and then I have a button down, and then I have a sweater, and then I have a hoodie," he said.

Another don't in this weather are sneakers, but Delrusso did suggest finding fashionable, warm boots.

"It goes up to the knee so your whole leg really stays warm and it still has the bottom that is safe for snow and walking," she said.

You can always go for a boot that's over the knee, and if you need to dress it up for work, go for a wedge heel.

"A wedge style is a lot easier to wear. You don't have to worry about the heels getting caught in anything, and it's a lot safer on the ankle," she explained.

Going out underdressed is a big don't, especially showing bare skin.

Wearing a hat is a do, and both berets and wide brims are in.

If you don't love hats you can cover your ears with earmuffs or a knit headband.

If your hair gets 'staticy' a laundry dryer sheet can help calm it down, and a loose pony tail can also help keep things neat and under control.

Chunky knit scarves are multi-purpose and easily wrap around your neck.

"You can just throw this over your head nicely and it keeps your hair protected, it keeps your ears warm and nice and toasty," Delrusso explained.

If it isn't freezing out you don't have to go with monster gloves. There are fingerless styles that you won't have to take off to use your phone.

For anyone looking to update their winter wardrobe, now is the time to do it with winter sales underway.
