Stop & Shop Stores Recall Paprika Product Due To Unlisted Peanuts

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Stop & Shop supermarkets on Friday announced a recall of a brand of paprika, on the grounds that the label on the condiment fails to mention that it might contain peanuts and could be dangerous for those who are allergic.

The Quincy, Massachusetts-based supermarket chain, which has locations throughout the Tri-State Area, announced a recall of Szeged Hungarian Paprika in 5-ounce containers, with UPC No. 7800600010, and lot number 091617PAHU05PS.

Stop & Shop has not received any reports of illness stemming from the paprika, but those who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts could have a severe or even life-threatening reaction if they use it, the store chain warned.

The reactions could include hives, flushed skin or another rash; a tingling or itching sensation in the mouth; swelling of the face, tongue or lips; vomiting and/or diarrhea; abdominal cramps; coughing or wheezing; dizziness and/or lightheadedness; swelling of the throat and vocal cords; difficulty breathing; or loss of consciousness.

Anyone who purchased the products should discard any unused portions and bring their receipt to Stop & Shop for a refund, the store said.

The product is not dangerous to people without peanut allergies or sensitivity, the store chain said.

Consumers looking for additional information on the recall are advised to call Spice-Co at (732) 499-9070, or to call Stop & Shop's Customer Service at (800) 767-7772, or to go to the Stop & Shop website at www.stopandshop.com.
