Cold Snap Settles Over Tri-State As Another Snowstorm Threatens

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A blast of bitter cold has swept over the region, leaving many shivering in their boots and scarves Saturday evening.

As CBS2's Ilana Gold reported from Mobile2, it's not easy being outside with the brutal wind gusts pushing the wind chill into the single digits.

Wind chills Saturday night will dip into the single digits to teens, CBS2 Meteorologist and Weather Producer Mark McIntyre Jr., reported.

A wind chill advisory was in effect for parts of the Tri-State area until around noon. The National Weather Service issues the advisory only when the gusts can create temperatures on the skin that feel 20 degrees below zero, according to CBS2 Chief Meteorologist and Weather Producer Giorgio Panetta.

Saturday morning started out with sub-zero wind chills, as low as -20 degrees in the suburbs northwest of New York City, CBS2 Meteorologist and Weather Producer Matt DeLucia reported.

High temperatures for the day will only top out in the low to mid-20s, but it will feel much colder due to brisk 15 to 25 mile-an-hour winds out of the northwest. Winds could gust up to 40 miles an hour at times, DeLucia reported.

Also on the horizon for the Tri-State area is more predicted snowfall.

A winter storm watch has been issued for New York City, northeast New Jersey and Long Island beginning at 6 p.m. Sunday through Monday afternoon.

Clouds are expected to increase throughout the day Sunday with highs in the low 30s. Light snow is expected to start Sunday evening and will pick up through the overnight hours into Monday, DeLucia reported.

The most recent forecast predicts a snow/mix/rain line will move northward into the city just in time for the morning commute on Monday. How far north this line moves will ultimately determine snowfall accumulations.

New York City, the north shore of Long Island, Westchester County and northern New Jersey could expect to see between 4 and 8 inches of snow by Monday evening, CBS2 Meteorologist Vanessa Murdock reported. Areas north and northwest of the city could be hit with 8 to 12 inches.

Areas south of New York City, including the south shore of Long Island, are expected to get about 2 to 4 inches of snow and places like Ocean County, New Jersey could only see about an inch, Murdock reported.

Given the last time the area expected a good snow fall and not much happened, many New Yorkers are shrugging it off.

"I think the meteorologists do the best job they can. I don't believe that I'm a better predictor of the weather patterns. I hope the politicians make responsible and not politically motivated decisions," one man told 1010 WINS' Gary Baumgarten.

The New York City Department of Sanitation has issued a snow alert beginning at 5 p.m. Sunday.

Sanitation are now prepping the city's snow equipment, including salt spreaders and snow plows.
