Edison Officials Scrambling After Snow Removal Gear Destroyed In Fire

EDISON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Officials in Edison, New Jersey are working on a plan to deal with impending snowfall after a fire destroyed snow removal equipment.

Edison Mayor Thomas Lankey said they'll have to deal with the upcoming threat of snow down nearly a dozen pieces of equipment that were destroyed in a fire at the public works garage, WCBS 880's Jim Smith reported.

Edison Officials Put Together Snow Contingency Plan After Snow Removal Gear Destroyed In Fire

Now officials are left scrambling to put together a contingency plan.

"The county is going to help us out with the major roadways and we have private contractors as well as municipalities helping us out," Lankey said.

Lankey said the township did not lose all of its equipment, so the help will just pick up some of the slack.

Council President Robert Diehl said the message for residents is: "We are going to take care of it. They don't really have to worry. Just get the cars off the street, make it easier for us to do the job."

Diehl added that the middle of winter is the worst timing to lose snow removal gear.

The fire broke out around 10 p.m. Thursday at the Edison Township Department of Public Works garage on New Durham Road.

By the time firefighters arrived, the building was already engulfed in flames. The building collapsed as the fire consumed fuel tanks, vehicles and tires.

Officials said the blaze destroyed six of the town's salt spreaders, most of the fleet, as well as sanitation and fire trucks being serviced in the maintenance garage and a supply of salt.

The fire remains under investigation.
