Man Accused Of Causing $100K Worth Of Damage To Manhattan Church

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A man is accused of trashing a church in the East Village, destroying religious artifacts in the process.

As 1010 WINS' Roger Stern reported, police found 20-year-old Michael Torres last week sitting in an alley outside the Church of the Immaculate Conception on East 14th Street.

Inside they found $100,000 worth of damage, including broken statues and crucifixes.

Torres, of Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, told police 'I was just praying. I used to go to the school here,' Stern reported.

Torres is charged with burglary, criminal mischief and aggravated harassment, all as hate crimes. He's being held on $10,000 bail.
