Merrick Parents Sign Petition In Protest Of Cutting Spanish Classes

MERRICK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - Some parents in the Merrick School District have signed an online petition to keep the Spanish program for 3rd-6th grade students after the school proposed cutting the instruction for younger students.

Gavin Glaser, 8, loves learning Spanish at his Merrick elementary school. His mother Kimberlie said she doesn't understand why the district proposed cutting Spanish classes for third through sixth graders.

"Every test the kids take after they have taken foreign for elementary school, they score higher. They're going to score higher on their SATs, they're going to score higher on all these core tests we have to take now," she said.

The superintendent said in a statement that "students' instructional time is a limited resource. In order to provide more time for Spanish, time would have to be taken from areas such as reading, math, social studies, science, art or music. This is not acceptable."

According to the online petition, the Merrick Board of Education will vote on whether or not to eliminate the program on February 10.
