Authorities: NJ Burglary Suspect Steals Police Vehicle, Strikes Officer

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Authorities are searching for a burglary suspect who allegedly stole a marked police vehicle and struck a police officer as he drove away.

New Brunswick police say the incident on Baldwin Street occurred around noon Wednesday.

Officers responding to a reported burglary in progress saw two men running away. One of them was soon captured, but the other led officers on a foot chase through several yards before he got in the police vehicle that was parked on a nearby street.

An officer there was struck as the suspect drove off. The cop was treated at a hospital for minor injuries.

The police vehicle was found abandoned a short time later.

The man captured at the scene, 24-year-old Duane Quarles Jr., of Plainfield, faces numerous charges, including burglary, eluding and conspiracy to commit attempted murder.

Police are asking anyone with information about the alleged burglary or the suspect being sought to call 732-745-5217.
