Firefighters Stay On Scene Of Major Ocean Grove Fire Through Saturday Morning

OCEAN GROVE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Firefighters are still on the scene of a major fire that ripped through the coastal New Jersey town of Ocean Grove.

Ten apartments and four businesses were destroyed when the flames broke out Friday afternoon just blocks from the beach.

The fire extra-alarm started around 3:45 p.m. at 50 Main Ave and became so intense, the roof of the building collapsed to the third and second floor, CBS2's Joe Biermann reported Friday.

"My neighbor came and banged on my door and said 'Get out now, there's a fire in my building,'" said Conisha, who was displaced by the fire.

"Ocean Grove is a tough, tight knit community," said Mike McGhee, with the Neptune Police Department. "Everyone looks out for each other."

More than 10 fire departments worked to stop the fire from spreading through the town.

One firefighter was injured after a slip and fall in dangerous conditions, CBS2 reported.

There is no word yet on what caused the fire.
