2/8 CBS2 Sunday Afternoon Weather Headlines

By Matt DeLucia
CBS2 Meteorologist/Weather Producer

Good afternoon!

Another cloudy day across the region today, with a seasonable high of 40 in the city. Some passing showers come into the picture this evening, with mix/snow showers to the north. This will be the beginning of what looks to be a messy 24 to 36 hours ahead.

Winter storm warnings are in effect for Sullivan, Ulster, and Dutchess counties. This is where it will be an all-snow event, and hence the highest totals will be found here. There are winter weather advisories elsewhere, where a wintry mix will be the main concern.

Snow should begin for the far northern suburbs by 6 to 9 tonight. During the overnight hours, a wintry mix will develop and then through Monday morning, will slowly fill in from NW to SE. The main concern for the city tomorrow will be the potential for a prolonged period of sleet and freezing rain, as surface temps hover around 32 to 34. The latest suggests a messy commute home tomorrow as well, with that wintry mix changing to snow as the system pulls away. Snow becomes more scattered heading into late Monday night, and wraps up from west to east by Tuesday morning.

How much are we talking when all is said and done? It's looking like 6-12" to the north, where it's all snow. 3-6" through parts of northern NJ and up into Fairfield county. As of now in the city, we're thinking around the 2" mark. Heading south, not much at all -- maybe a trace to 1". Again, the main threat for NYC will be the early icing.

Once again, the rain/snow line will be the key, including how quickly that changeover to snow occurs at the end. A tight snowfall gradient is likely around the city, and a slight shift in the track will nudge these totals north or south. You'll definitely want to check back in tonight for the latest!

Sunshine returns for Tuesday, with highs in the mid to upper 30s. Have a good one!
