City's DOE To Unveil New Disciplinary Policies After Lawsuit
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The New York City Department of Education plans to unveil some changes in disciplinary policy.
As WCBS 880's Marla Diamond reported, the changes follow a lawsuit filed by 11 parents of elementary school-age children who were allegedly punished in unusual ways.
"In fact, most of them were about 5 years old at the time when they were sent -- some of them repeatedly -- to local emergency rooms for disruptive behaviors," said Nelson Mar, an attorney with Bronx Legal Services.

The New York Daily News reported the DOE's plan includes new conflict resolution training for school staffers, and a new process to review cases of student insubordination.
The goal is to decrease an overreliance on suspensions, the newspaper reported.
Critics claim the old rules unfairly targeted minority students.
