Couples Married For More Than 50 Years Share Their Secrets For Enduring Marriage

NEW HYDE PARK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Couples who tied the knot more than half a century ago and are still together are sharing their secrets.

"We've been married for 56 years," Phyllis Granat of Manhattan told an audience during a Valentine's Day event at LIJ Medical Center on Friday.

Granat and her husband, Harvey, are among the love birds featured in a new book titled, "I Do."

Robert Nissen, 86, of Port Washington, is also featured in the book. He was married 51 years until his wife's death parted them.

"Cindy died literally in my arms," Nissen said.

The book looks at the elements of an enduring marriage, which co-author Dr. Gisele Wolf-Klein of LIJ Medical Center calls the four "C's."

"Chemistry, commitment, communication and compromise," Wolf-Klein said, stressing compromise is most important.

Wolf-Klein found couples who stay together for more than 50 years are up to the challenge.

"Challenges that you would never be able to have handled alone," Wolf-Klein said.

So what's it like being married to someone for more than 50 years?

"I can look at her and know how she feels," Harvey Granat said. "She can look at me and know if I'm in pain or if I'm happy."
