NYC Sets Record Of 11 Days Without A Murder

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - We've all heard about a cold blooded killer, but has it been too cold to kill?

New York City has now gone 11 days without a murder.

Officials aren't crediting the cold and snow, however.

Mayor Bill de Blasio called the streak a testament to the hard work of the NYPD, adding that it is "further evidence that New York is the safest big city in America," 1010 WINS reported.

Sgt. Ed Mullins of the Sergeants Benevolent Association told 1010 WINS weather does indeed play role.

"A major contributing factor has been the cold weather. We've been in below freezing temperatures, which really keeps people off the streets, less confrontation," Mullins said.

Mullins added the homicide numbers don't tell the complete story.

"If you look at the homicides and you compare them to the shootings, there's no homicides but shootings are up," Mullins said. "So either we have bad shots or we have an excellent response time being done with a great amount of medical assistance."

The streak could end if a 19-year-old woman shot in the chest in Wingate, Brooklyn early Friday morning dies. She remains in critical condition at Kings County Hospital.
