NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — As the president of one of the most influential and successful empowerment programs for African-American men in New York City, choosing Michael Garner as one of this year's Black History Month honorees was a no-brainer.
Garner, president of One Hundred Black Men, Inc. of New York, said the organization right now is doing better than ever.
"Life is great. We had our top student who graduated from the Eagle Academy in the Bronx accepted at U Penn on full scholarship," Garner said. "So the things that we are doing in terms of mentoring and making sure that they get the right courses is working."

And mentoring is just one part of the vast project that is One Hundred Black Men. Garner said the organization is now a full-scale operation with six schools.
"When you have our young men who are seeking attention and acting out, they want someone that can guide them, that can tell them that we love them and we support you," he said. "And they started reading more, getting better grades."
Garner said it's an open process for anyone interested in joining One Hundred Black Men.
"It's six city schools and they can apply and we take all students. So regardless of their background we take them, we mold them, we guide them and they're graduating in record numbers -- 98 percent," Garner said.
