Queens Killing Marks End Of City's Homicide-Free Stretch

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The city's homicide-free streak is over.

On Friday, a man was found at his home in the Woodhaven section of Queens with gunshot wounds to his head, hand and leg, police said. He was transported to Jamaica Hospital, where he died from his injuries Saturday.

Police, who are calling the killing a homicide, identified the victim as Eric Roman, 28, of 91-35 89th St.

No arrest has been made.

The city had gone 12 days without a homicide, the longest stretch since the city began to keep records. Police said they consider a homicide to officially have occurred on the day when the victim dies.

Before police released details of Roman's killing, there was already speculation the streak may have ended.

A 56-year-old man was found dead in a Kew Gardens basement with head trauma Saturday, police said. The New York City medical examiner's office will determine the cause of death.

The previous last confirmed homicide in the city had happened Feb. 1, when Shadale Graham, 28, was shot and killed at 136th Street in Broadway in Hamilton Heights, 1010 WINS reported.
