Report: Giants Are Using Non-Exclusive Franchise Tag On Pierre-Paul

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Giants are using a non-exclusive franchise tag on free-agent defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, according to the New York Post.

The newspaper reports that general manager Jerry Reese would like to sign the 26-year-old to a long-term contract. JPP will earn $14.6 million in 2015-16 if he and the Giants are unable to work out a deal.

Unlike the traditional franchise tag, the non-exclusive franchise tag allows other teams to offer Pierre-Paul a contract. If the two-time Pro Bowler signs elsewhere, the team he joins will have to give the Giants two first-round picks as compensation.

The former first-round pick has played every down of his career with the Giants since breaking into the league in 2010. He's played in all 16 regular-season games every season but one (2013), and was a key member of the Giants team that beat the Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI.

Following a disappointing 2013 campaign, the 2011 All-Pro was excellent for New York this past season. He recorded 77 combined tackles, 12 1/2 sacks, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

The Giants, who have missed the playoffs five of the last six seasons, could certainly use Pierre-Paul moving forward. Big Blue had trouble stopping opponents during its disappointing 6-10 season, finishing 22nd in the league in scoring defense and 29th in yards allowed.

Defensive coordinator Perry Fewell was fired by the Giants in early January, and Steve Spagnuolo was hired to replace him.
