New Yorkers Enjoy Brief Reprieve From Bitter Cold

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- New Yorkers took advantage Sunday of the break from brutally cold temperatures.

After Saturday's storm, above-freezing temperatures melted much of the snow and turned it into slush, CBS2's Valerie Castro reported.

People out enjoying the warm weather had to hop around slush and jump giant puddles.

But with the temps hitting the low 40s in Manhattan, Ryan and his son, Hudson, ventured out to Riverside Park for some playtime.

"I'm playing with snowballs," Hudson, 3, told 1010 WINS' Roger Stern.

"We've been holed up for a month now," Ryan said. "Haven't really done much, so it's amazing to be outside and play around."

Others were walking their dogs or strolling through Riverside Park.

"It's lovely," said Hank, from the Upper West Side. "That's why I'm sitting on the bench. I cleaned it off. I'm the only guy sitting on a bench, as far as I can tell. But it's wonderful."

And despite the slushy obstacles, many said it was a welcome change.

"The kids are enjoying being out rather than being stuck in the house doing the video games. That's all they seem to be doing lately because they're inside. But it's a great day," Silvana Adipietro told Castro.

The winter reprieve, however, is a short one.

Temperatures are expected to plummet Sunday night. On Monday, the high will be in the high 20s, with wind chills making it feel like it's in the single digits or teens. Monday night's low will dip to about 5 degrees in Midtown, forecasters say.
