Mets Talking Tough On T-Shirt: 'Take The Damn Thing'

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The New York Mets aren't messing around with their expectations for 2015.

Players at spring training in Port St. Lucie, Fla. were given T-shirts that say "Take The Damn Thing," according to Robert Brender of SNY. The "thing" is presumably the NL East, which the Mets haven't won since their last trip to the postseason in 2006.

Mets manager Terry Collins said Saturday that "it's time" for his team to take the next step, adding they should "absolutely" be playing in October.

His players are also making Amazin' predictions. Jacob deGrom, Jenrry Mejia and Juan Lagares are among those on the roster talking about a trip to the postseason.

But captain David Wright said the Mets have to "back it up" by playing winning baseball. He wasn't a fan of the "Underdog" T-shirts distributed by Mets COO Jeff Wilpon during spring training three years ago.

"I'm confident in this team," Wright said Sunday, "but at this point talk is cheap."

The Washington Nationals are considered front-runners to repeat as division champs after going 96-66 in 2014. The Mets finished tied for second at 79-83.
