Fashion Expert: Adding Color To Your Wardrobe Can Brighten Your Day

UNION, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- If you're sick and tired of winter, there might be a way to turn things around with color.

As CBS2's Cindy Hsu found out on Wednesday, clothing can make the mood.

If you are hibernating in black, Rosa Caro of Queens said to try pink.

"I figured I'd wear the hat with the flower and it makes me feel more cheerful and looking forward to the flowers in the spring," Caro said.

Linda Ranier of Katonah, N.Y., said red rocks it for her.

"I think that when you feel colorful, you feel happier," Ranier said.

Fashion expert Dawn Delrusso says color can make all the difference, like orange is playful and can help bring you out of your shell. However, you have to choose wisely.

"If you are going to a meeting that's very corporate, stay away from it, but if you're more in that creative industry and you want to show that side of you, go with an orange tie," Delrusso said.

Red, it turns out, translates to confidence.

"Red is a power color. It says 'look at me,' sort of like the orange but even more," DelRusso said. "If you notice on the red carpet, when a star wears red, we'll all like, woah, okay, she's ready to make a statement."

Blue can help create calm and serenity, a good choice if you're nervous or edgy. Yellow can really turn your mood around. It's sunny, warm and can help with optimism. White is cleansing.

"It brings energies into your life that you don't expect. It clears everything out," Delrusso said.

Purple is regal, and the color for leaders.

"So, leadership is a little different than power. It means that you're ready to take on the room," Delrusso said.

Green is a color of healing and is also considered a bridge between yourself and others, so it's a good choice if you plan on networking.

Pink says compassion and love and can help you appear more approachable.

Delrusso said the key is to have fun with color -- and even though it's still winter, anything goes.
