South Nyack Residents Fight Against Tappan Zee Path Plan

SOUTH NYACK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- South Nyack residents raised a collective voice Tuesday night, telling the state the new Tappan Zee Bridge's shared-use path is not welcome in their residential neighborhood.

About 200 people packed the village Board of Trustees meeting, many arguing that the path should not terminate in a residential area, WCBS 880's Sean Adams reported. Residents said they don't want a steady stream of bicycles, joggers, sightseers and parked cars on their now-quiet streets.

"The traffic is the big one -- the safety of people crossing roads," South Nyack Trustee Andrew Goodwillie told Adams. "And one of the factors is the feeling that the state has bullied the village almost ... . This is the solution that the state has decided without much input from the village."

Patrick Parietti, a marathon runner, said he has mixed feelings about the path.

"I think that, of course, a bike path would be great, but already we have parking issues in Nyack," he said.

Residents said they would rather see the walkway end near the New York Thruway's Exit 10.

The Thruway Authority is still gathering public input, but said Exit 10 poses logistical challenges because the land is currently being used as a construction staging area.
