NYPD Officer On Vacation In Florida Helps Rescue Teen From Water

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A New York City police officer was relaxing on a Florida beach last weekend when he suddenly found himself back in action.

Veteran NYPD Officer Albert Mammon was on the beach in Bal Harbour, just north of Miami Beach, when 17-year-old swimmer Christopher Tran started screaming for help.

Tran's sister, Cynthia, said she started crying and didn't know what to do to help her brother.

"I was just crying my eyes out," she said. "I just went to the biggest person I could find like, 'Help me. Please. I don't know what to do.'"

Mammon and other beachgoers quickly answered the call and ran into the water to rescue the teen.

"I'm just looking like, this kid's gonna die," Mammon said. "When I went into the water he was distressed."

Cynthia Tran said she is eternally grateful to all the strangers came to her brother's rescue.

"I was amazed at how many people just jumped in so quickly to help him," she said. "I honestly thought I was going to lose my brother and I wasn't going to let that happen."

Christopher Tran is doing fine and is now back home in upstate New York, CBS2 reported. He was in Florida visiting his sister who is a student at a local university.

"This is one of those for the ages," said Mammon, who was quick to point out that he was just in the right place at the right time.
