65-Year-Old Yankees Fan Walking From Tampa To Bronx For Charity

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Richard J. Albero is more than just a diehard Yankees fan.

He's also an inspirational hero who's setting out on a remarkable journey.

The 65-year-old former naval officer and retired teacher is set to walk from the Yankees' spring training facility in Tampa, Fla., to Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. The trek, which began on Monday, is expected to take between two-and-a-half months and four months.

Why is Albero walking 1,200 miles? To raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project. Albero's nephew, Gary, was killed in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

"I came up with this concept for this walk from my dream of doing something for charity in my post-retirement life," Albero said in his official YouTube video. "And being an ex-naval officer and my love of the Yankees, I kind of came up, I thought, with a really cool concept with the Wounded Warrior Project."

Donations will be made in honor of current and former Yankees players.

"Each mile is named after a Yankee player from 1913 to the present," Albero said. "Each mile, as you get closer to the stadium, is for more famous Yankee players and will require more of a donation amount to reserve that particular mile."

Albero is looking to raise $25,000. As of Monday morning, he had raised over $12,000. He's also looking to raise $10,000 for expenses, and he's received $1,200 from supporters.

You can track where Albero is along the East Cost on his website. You can also make a donation there.

Albero plans to walk about 20 miles per day.
