Barnard College Dorm Building Reportedly Evacuated After Fire

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An extra-alarm fire broke out late Tuesday in a building on the Columbia University campus, reportedly prompting the evacuation of the Barnard College dormitory.

The 2-alarm fire was reported around 11:30 p.m. in the building at 600 W. 116th St., according to a tweet from the FDNY.

A Barnard College residence hall that also houses private apartments is listed at the 116th Street address.

The tweet said the fire was in a shaft on the first floor of the multiple-dwelling building.

Barnard College student and Columbia Daily Spectator staff writer Mikaela Davis reported that students were evacuated from the 116th Street dorm were evacuated, and advised to find alternative housing.

Some Barnard dorms in the Quad were also evacuated, but students were let back in early Wednesday, Davis reported. She reported that the 116th Street dorm remained evacuated as of 12:53 a.m.

Two people suffered minor injuries and were taken to St. Luke's Hospital, the FDNY told CBS2. The Columbia Spectator reported the injured people were students.

Photos from the scene also appeared to show extensive damage to Ollie's Noodle Shop on the ground floor of the building. The Spectator reported the windows at the restaurant collapsed.

Information from Columbia and Barnard officials was not immediately available.

By 12:48 a.m., the fire was officially under control, the FDNY said via Twitter.
