New York Looking To Hire More Than A Thousand Lifeguards This Summer

ALBANY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) – Can you swim? Does the possibility of saving lives inspire you?

New York state is looking to hire more than 1,000 lifeguards to work at swimming pools and beaches in its parks this summer.

The state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation says it plans to hire new and returning lifeguards for the summer season.

Parks Commissioner Rose Harvey is lifeguarding is a way for high school and college students to make money and gain job experience in a "friendly, active and fun environment.''

State park lifeguards must be at least 16 years old and meet certain eligibility criteria, including passing a qualifying exam before being hired.

Pre-registration for exams is strongly encouraged.
