CBS2 Exclusive: Thrown Bricks, Concrete Nearly Hit 2 People In The Bronx

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Williamsbridge section of the Bronx saw two frightening attacks with bricks or rocks this past weekend, and two people said they were lucky they escaped serious injury.

As CBS2's Tony Aiello reported exclusively, police Monday night were trying to find out who was responsible, and whether the attacks were connected.

Raj Pawa said someone threw a five-pound brick at him on Saturday night.

"It could have hit me," he said.

Pawa could not believe it.

"Speechless," he said. "I'm just like, watching the brick fly through the air, and you're just like, OK; you don't know what to think."

It happened around 8 p.m. in front of the pizzeria that Pawa owns on Boston Road in Williamsbridge.

He said he saw a young man smashing the driver's-side window on his sport-utility vehicle. When Pawa and a friend gave chase, the suspect threw the brick and took off.

Pawa said he believes the assailant picked up the brick from a pile by a tree nearby.

"He picked it up from here, because of this tree – there's always loose bricks around here," he said.

About 90 minutes later and a mile away, someone kicked or threw a heavy object off the 233rd Street overpass above the Bronx River Parkway.

The item struck a sedan traveling south on the expressway, smashing the windshield. Mary Georgioudakis, a CBS2 employee, was at the wheel.

"I was just so scared that I was going to crash into something," she said, "and thank God I didn't."

Georgioudakis said it was the fright of her life.

"I was hysterical," she said. "I was covered in glass. I had glass all over my face, my body. There was glass all over the car."

Just like at Pawa's pizzeria, something to throw was right there at the scene. In the case of the Bronx River Parkway incident, it was chunks of asphalt from all the recent potholes.

"These kids aren't even thinking; don't even take into consideration that they can seriously injure somebody," Georgioudakis said.

Police late Monday were working to determine if the incidents were connected.
