Report: Real Madrid Superstar Cristiano Ronaldo Considering Eventual Move To MLS

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Imagine Cristiano Ronaldo playing for New York City FC.

No, it's not a joke. It's reportedly possible.

According to SI.com, the Portuguese superstar is considering a move to MLS in 2018, after his current contract with Real Madrid expires.

Ronaldo has been at the top of his game for the last several years, winning the FIFA Ballon d'Or in both 2013 and 2014 and three world player of the year awards overall.

The 30-year-old forward would likely be interested in playing in New York, Los Angeles or a yet-to-be- established team in Miami, SI.com reported.

MLS has had success drawing several of the world's top players to North America over the last few years, albeit towards the end of their careers. Among the many that have come over, English legend David Beckham led L.A. Galaxy to MLS Cup championships in 2012 and 2013, former French star Thierry Henry played four seasons with the Red Bulls and Spanish striker David Villa joined NYCFC for its inaugural 2015 season.

Steve Gerrard (L.A. Galaxy) and Frank Lampard (NYCFC), both of England national team fame, will join MLS this summer.

Ronaldo, however, would be the biggest get of all, regardless of his age. The captain of Portugal's national team has 52 goals in 118 international appearances, plus 207 goals in 189 appearances for Real Madrid, which plays in La Liga, Spain's top professional league.
