Police: Man Attacked, Sexually Abused Woman On Lower East Side

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police late Thursday were asking for help from the public in finding a suspect who attacked and sexually abused a woman in a Lower East Side building.

Around 8:40 p.m. Wednesday, the 51-year-old woman was followed into her apartment building at an unspecified address by the suspect, police said. Once they reached the fifth floor, the suspect approached the woman from behind, choked her, and sexually abused her, police said.

The woman was eventually able to fight off the suspect, and he ran off, police said.

The victim was rushed to Bellevue Hospital Center, where she was treated for bruises to her hands and neck, police said.

The suspect was described as a Hispanic male in his mid-30s, standing 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing 190 pounds.

Police have released surveillance photos and video.
