Crews Install Glass Plates At WTC Transportation Hub, Moving Project Closer To Completion

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A major step is being taken at the World Trade Center transportation hub, where glass installation started this week, bringing a flood of natural light to the space.

"Well, it's another major milestone for us, and we're getting close to the end now," said Steven Plate.

Plate is the head of World Trade Center construction for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. He told WCBS 880's Peter Haskell the 5-foot-by-10-foot panels will reach a height of about 100 feet.

"All high-end glass, over an inch thick; each piece weighs over a thousand pounds," he said.

The $4 billion project is expected to be completed sometime in 2016.
