CT Woman Gets 10 Years For Hit-And-Run Death Of Elderly Woman

STAMFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) - A Connecticut woman prosecutors said was high on drugs and alcohol has been sentenced to the maximum 10 years for the hit-and-run death of a police officer's 70-year-old mother.

Forty-six-year-old Yolanda McDowell apologized at her sentencing Friday in Stamford Superior Court. She pleaded guilty in January to charges including reckless manslaughter.

Margarita Gonzalez was killed on Easter Sunday 2014. Prosecutors said two other cars stopped to allow her to cross a street after visiting a relative but McDowell served around one of them and struck her.

As WCBS 880's Paul Murnane reported in April 2014, Margarita Gonzalez was the mother of a veteran Stamford police investigator.

The Stamford Advocate reports about 30 Gonzalez family members were in court Friday. Her daughter Luz Colon asked the judge for the maximum sentence and said later it was "justice for my mom.''

Prosecutors cited McDowell's long criminal record in seeking a tough sentence. Her attorney said she is remorseful.
