De Blasio Taps Longtime Union Official As His Chief Of Staff

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A union official who previously served in Boston's government has been appointed chief of staff for Mayor Bill de Blasio.

De Blasio announced the appointment of Thomas Snyder on Monday.

Snyder has spent nearly two decades with UNITE HERE -- most recently as international vice president.

The union represents people in the U.S. and Canada who work in a number of industries, including hotel, gaming, food service, airport, textile, manufacturing, distribution, laundry and transportation.

"On day one, our administration pledged to provide New Yorkers with strong and effective leadership that will deliver for all our city's residents," de Blasio said in a news release. "By putting the Mayor's Office in Snyder's experienced and capable hands, we continue to build on this pledge today. I look forward to working alongside Snyder as we strive to provide residents across the five boroughs with the services, support and leadership they deserve."

In Boston, Snyder's positions included administrative services director. This is his first post in New York.

He replaces Laura Santucci. She left the administration after leading Brooklyn's failed bid to secure the 2016 Democratic National Convention.

Santucci accepted a new post at the World Food Organization, one of the United Nations' aid organizations.
