Report: Jets Interested In Signing Veteran Quarterback Matt Schaub

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Might there be a three-man -- or even four-man -- competition in training camp?

Geno Smith is the Jets' No. 1 quarterback at the moment, head coach Todd Bowles said last week. But if he struggles, veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick -- who was traded to New York earlier this month -- will be waiting in the wings to take over.

And on Monday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Jets have some level of interest in signing 33-year-old quarterback Matt Schaub.

Schaub backed up rookie Derek Carr in Oakland this past season and was released on March 16. A two-time Pro Bowler and former NFL passing yards leader, the Virginia product appeared in 11 games in 2014 but attempted just 10 passes. He completed five of them for 57 yards, throwing two interceptions and no touchdowns and fumbling three times.

And then, of course, there's the upcoming draft. The Jets have the sixth overall pick, and many experts predict that they will select reigning Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota.

But it's very conceivable that Mariota will be off the board when the Jets are on the clock.

Matt Simms is the other quarterback on the roster, and Michael Vick is an unrestricted free agent. He's expected to sign elsewhere.
