NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police Tuesday night were searching for a suspect in an attempted rape in East Harlem last week.

Around 4:40 a.m. Wednesday March 25, the suspect followed a 19-year-old woman into an apartment building on Third Avenue, and went up the elevator with her, police said.

Upon reaching the 12th floor, the suspect dragged her out of the elevator and into the stairwell, and tried to rape her, police said.

The victim resisted, but the suspect stole her iPhone before running off, police said.

The suspect was described as a black male between 5 feet 9 and 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighing 170 to 180 pounds. He was last seen wearing a red hooded sweatshirt, a black jacket with a white collar, blue jeans, and red sneakers.

Police have released surveillance video.

Anyone with information was asked to call the NYPD Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS, log onto the Crime Stoppers website, or text tips to 274637 (CRIMES) and enter TIP577.
