De Blasio Announces Expanded Staten Island Ferry Service

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) - Staten Island Ferry service will soon be expanded on weekend mornings and overnight.

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Wednesday that the city was committed to bringing better transit service to parts of the city that have long gone underserved.

Beginning May 1, the city will add six round trips. The new round trips will depart from the St. George Ferry Terminal on Saturdays at 2:30 a.m.; on Sundays at 2:30 a.m., 6:30 a.m., 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.; and on Mondays at 12:30 a.m. The ferry will make return trips 30 minutes later.

The city says it will eventually have full 30-minute service seven days a week.

"The Staten Island Ferry is the lifeline for an entire borough," de Blasio said in a statement. "Setting a 30-minute standard for service will help Staten Islanders work, grow businesses on the island, and bring us closer to a day when every New Yorker has access to frequent, reliable public transit."

About 65,000 passengers ride the ferry daily between lower Manhattan and Staten Island.
