Hit-And-Run Driver Kills 61-Year-Old Man In Flushing, Queens

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Police are looking for a driver who hit and killed a 61-year-old man in Queens late Wednesday night and fled the scene.

The crash happened on 46th Avenue near Utopia Parkway in Flushing around 11:30 p.m, police said. When police arrived at the scene, they found the man unconscious in the street with severe head trauma.

The man was taken to Flushing Hospital where he was pronounced dead, CBS2's Andrea Grymes reported.

Police said the man was crossing 46th Avenue midblock when he was hit.

Several people who work and live in the area told CBS2 accidents are nothing new on the block, moreso at the intersection.

"It's so dangerous," said Maria Soto. "You have to be so cautious. Very, very dangerous."

The fact that the driver took off and left the man in the street has residents like Gary angry.

"It's pretty cold-blooded, you know when you hit somebody and to keep on going. It's crazy," he told 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck. "And it's a shame because it's so quiet here at night that no one caught a plate number."

Police do not yet have a description of the vehicle and are not releasing the victim's name until his family is notified.

On Thursday morning, staffers from the city Department of Transportation were on scene inspecting the area, routine after incidents like Wednesday night's.
