Police Arrest Alleged Shooter From Resorts World Casino Brawl

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police have arrested a man who they believe fired shots in the parking lot of the Resorts World Casino, shortly after a massive brawl broke out inside Friday night.

After the chaos spilled out to the parking lot of the casino in Ozone Park, Queens, one person captured dashcam video that appeared to show a man pulling out a gun and shooting. Police confirmed shots were fired, but do not believe anyone was hit.

The NYPD said it used a combination of surveillance video, a license plate reader, vehicle registration information, a driver's license photo and facial recognition software before identifying the suspect as Jaquan Roberts, 22, of Brooklyn.

Police announced Tuesday that Roberts has been arrested and charged with two counts of assault, criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment.

He was also arrested in 2010 on charges of having a loaded .22-caliber revolver after he shot himself in the leg, police said.

In video of the melee, taken around 10:30 p.m. Friday, people are seen hurling chairs across the casino's food court and throwing punches as innocent bystanders try to run for cover.

Witness Jermaine Carry told The Associated Press some line-cutting sparked ire as hundreds of people waited to buy daiquiris at a new Fat Tuesday bar. He said then it was "like a wild frat party gone wrong."

"All I remember was it was chairs flying everywhere," witness Elize Brown said. "It was chaotic. It was too much going on at one time. A lot of people were there. The line was ridiculously long."

Police said there were 300 people present at the time of the incident and only a few reported minor injuries, including an officer whose hand was hurt.

Witnesses told 1010 WINS about 30 people were involved in the fight.

However, the damage to the casino is fairly extensive, CBS2's Ilana Gold reported. Investigators said repairs will cost up to $4,000.

By Saturday morning, video of the brawl had gone viral and the fight was trending on Twitter.

Three other men were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.

One of the men, however, had charges against him dropped during a court appearance Saturday afternoon. The other two — Jovan Bovall and Marcus Stewart — were issued summonses and released without bail, CBS2's Dave Carlin reported.
