Police: Teen Calls 911, Falsely Reports Seeing Man With Rifle In L.I. Park

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A Long Island teen is accused of sending police on a wild-goose chase after making a false report to 911, police said.

Andrew Denton, 17, made the call around 7:41 p.m. Monday and said he saw a man with a rifle walking down the trails of Brady Park in Massapequa, according to detectives.

The call prompted a huge police response. Several units from the Seventh Precinct along with the Bureau of Special Operations and Air Bureau were dispatched and searched the area for about 45 minutes, police said.

Denton was arrested at his home in East Meadow Tuesday night and charged with third-degree falsely reporting an incident. He is also charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon for having a gravity knife on him at the time of his arrest, police said.

He is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday at First District Court in Hempstead.
